Several barriers affect the implementation of a new practice into the healthcare system. These barriers include a lack of EBP knowledge and skills, a negative attitude toward evidence-based care, resistance to change, a lack of EBP mentors, and inadequate time and resources (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). Implementation of these new practices takes a long and requires a huge bulk of resources. When these resources are not adequately provided, the process will remain stagnant, affecting the outcome. Also, the time allocated for such a process must be sufficient to ensure all procedures are set up.
EBP knowledge and skills are crucial for this process to take place. Nurses must be trained and equipped with these skills for them to appreciate the need for new practices. When the skills and knowledge are lacking or inadequate, the process will not have well-equipped professionals to handle it. The lack of EBP mentors at health facility centers may also be a significant problem to its implementation. These people provide guidelines and information to nurses within a given facility, instilling skills in them. The attitude towards change is crucial in accepting the need for it. Everyone should be enabled to embrace the need for change in any facility. Therefore, it will be challenging to achieve the intended purpose when there is a negative attitude towards a certain change.
The first primary strategy is the correction of misperceptions about the EBP. The process should be clarified adequately, and teaching the basics of EBP is crucial for its implementation. Most nurses lack proper base foundation knowledge of the system, resulting in resistance in times of their use (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). When there are adequate training sessions on the subject, there are high chances of overcoming the negative attitude. For example, many healthcare practitioners believe that it is difficult and time-consuming to search and obtain critically appraising research articles. However, these medical practitioners lack the knowledge and skills to obtain this information from recognized databases that are easy to use. Therefore, knowledge of using platforms such as Cochrane Library is crucial for obtaining such research articles.
One of the most critical problems that prevent the implementation of evidence-based practices from being successful is a lack of understanding. The majority of instructors responsible for instructing pupils lack the necessary knowledge to ensure the success of EBP. When selecting educators, it is critical to ensure that they have the skills required to make a difference in students’ lives (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). It is also crucial to choose a core faculty capable of imparting the appropriate skills and education to pupils. Students could be sent to institutions for on-the-job training to learn in a practical setting rather than merely conceptually.
